Song Ge was silent for a long while. It took her some time to regain her voice. "How is Zhai Cheng now?"
On the other end of the phone came Leng Jing's angry voice. If Song Ge were right in front of her at that moment, they would surely have torn into each other. "You still have the nerve to ask! Before meeting you, Uncle had everything going smoothly. But ever since he met you, his family fell apart, and now even his company is in trouble. Song Ge, you're just a jinx!"
It felt as if someone had grabbed her throat. Song Ge couldn't catch her breath for a moment. A few seconds later, she gasped for fresh air but couldn't utter a single word because she also thought Leng Jing was right. It seemed that because of her, everyone around her had become worse off.
"If you have a conscience, stay away from my uncle and never show up again!" After saying that, Leng Jing hung up the phone directly.
Song Ge stood there blankly, holding her phone. Her mind was in a complete mess. Regardless of the fact that she was at work, she left the company.
She walked aimlessly, lost in her own world. She even walked straight across the pedestrian crossing when the traffic light was red.
"Beep! Beep!"
The sudden honking of a car horn woke Song Ge up.
"Are you trying to commit suicide? If you want to die, please do it in a place where there's no one around." The uncle driving the car shouted curses at Song Ge.
Song Ge quickly withdrew her foot and rushed across the pedestrian crossing.
Was it a mistake for her to exist in this world?
Feeling extremely sad, Song Ge called Wu Yilan. "I want to see you."
"Come on. I'm at home. I'll be going out later." Wu Yilan probably also sensed that Song Ge's tone wasn't right.
After hanging up the phone, Song Ge took a taxi there.
When she passed by an alley, she saw Wu Yilan and her mother. She was about to step forward to say hello, but then she heard their conversation.
"Where are you going?"
Wu Yilan tidied up her hair and clothes. "Song Ge just asked to meet me. I'm going out."
Upon hearing the name Song Ge, Wu's mother's face clearly changed. "I've told you so many times to have less contact with Song Ge, but you just won't listen. You'll understand later!"
Wu Yilan retorted unhappily, "Mom, how can you talk about Song Ge like that? She's my good friend."
Wu's mother snorted. Since the last incident, she hadn't liked Song Ge very much. "You never listen to me. Do as you like." Angrily, she walked into the house.
Wu Yilan looked nonchalant, still chewing gum. Suddenly, the phone in her bag rang. It was Song Ge.
"Hello, are you here?"
"Yilan, I'm sorry. I just remembered I have something to do. I can't come." Song Ge stood at the turning, looking at Wu Yilan, and tears streamed down uncontrollably.
Sorry, I don't want to drag you down anymore.
Wu Yilan frowned. "Are you hiding something from me?" She knew Song Ge had always been like this. Whenever there was something, she always kept it to herself and endured it silently.
Song Ge covered her mouth to stop herself from making a sound. After a while, she tried hard to control her emotions. "No, I just suddenly have something to do and can't come." She paused. "Yilan, I'm really glad to have met you in this life."
Wu Yilan was completely confused by Song Ge's sudden words. "What on earth is wrong with you?"
"Nothing. I just had a sudden feeling. Take good care of yourself. I have to go now." Song Ge hung up the phone.
Wu Yilan looked at her phone and smiled. "This silly girl." Then she walked out of the alley.
Song Ge squatted down, hugged herself, and cried loudly. After that, she left and walked to the outside of her residential community.
Just as she was about to go in, she saw Mother An coming out with the trash. She hid and finally didn't go back.
She just sent a text message to Mother An.
"Mom, am I a jinx? Everyone around me has become worse because of me. Are all the bad things because of me?"
Mother An had just returned home. Her phone was charging in the bedroom, so she didn't see the text message immediately. Instead, she was busy with her housework.
After sending the text message, Song Ge turned off her phone and put it in her bag. Leng Jing's words echoed in her mind. Yes, she really should leave. It would be better for everyone.
Song Ge transferred most of the money in her card to Mother An and took out a small amount for herself to take away.
She bought a boat ticket and embarked on her journey alone.
Mother An finally had time to look at her phone after finishing her evening chores. As soon as she turned it on, there were all kinds of text messages, some from Song Ge and some from the bank. Seeing the sudden increase in her money, she felt a bit uneasy.
After reading Song Ge's text message and connecting it with the transfer, Mother An immediately understood what was going on. Her hands trembling, she found Song Ge's phone number.
"Sorry, the number you dialed is turned off. Please try again later..."
Mother An panicked instantly. She didn't know what to do. Subconsciously, she found Father Song's phone number and called him.
Father Song was playing Chinese chess with someone outside the residential community. He was having a great time and didn't hear the ringing.
Seeing that the call wasn't answered for a long time, Mother An had no choice but to hang up. She wanted to call the police, but it hadn't been 24 hours yet. Helplessly, she tried to contact Song Ge's good friend, Wu Yilan.
"Hello, is this Wu Yilan's home?"
"Who is this?" Mother Wu answered the phone.
"I'm Song Ge's mother. Is Wu Yilan there? I'd like to talk to her."
Mother Wu was originally unhappy, but she still called Wu Yilan.
"Auntie, do you need something from me?" Wu Yilan answered the phone.
"Do you know where Song Ge is? She sent me some strange text messages and transferred a sum of money to me. I'm afraid something might have happened to her." The more Mother An talked, the more out of control her emotions became.
Wu Yilan remembered that when Song Ge called her today, something was indeed off. It all made sense now. "Auntie, don't be too anxious. I'll try to contact her. I'll call you as soon as I have any news."
"Okay, thank you." Mother An hung up the phone.
Wu Yilan tried to contact Song Ge, but the phone was also turned off. Subconsciously, she thought of Zhai Cheng. However, she didn't have Zhai Cheng's contact information, so she immediately took a taxi to look for him.
Mother An sat alone in the living room. The silence around her was terrifying. It seemed that her tears had dried up. She just stared blankly at the ceiling.
Suddenly, there was the sound of the door opening. She immediately sat up. "Song Ge, you..."
When she saw Father Song, the light in her eyes dimmed. "You still remember to come back? Song Ge is in trouble. Do you know that!"
Father Song was completely at a loss. Mother An told him the whole story.
"All we can do now is wait." Father Song sighed. The old couple leaned against each other, looking at Song Ge's photo on the coffee table.
