Chapter 44: Becoming a Mom without Pain

Hearing Wu Pengpeng's voice, the crowd waiting outside the door felt as if they had received an amnesty order.

The anxiety that had been weighing on their hearts finally lifted, and they all heaved a long sigh of relief.

As long as she was alive, that was enough.

Only Jiang Xinyu looked at the smiling Wu Pengpeng as if she were staring at a deathly talisman, filled with fear and unease.

Before, seeing Wu Pengpeng's serious injuries, Jiang Xinyu was certain that she wouldn't survive. She had planned to strike first while everyone was in a panic. However, Zhao Bufan had escalated the situation, leaving her in an awkward position.

Fortunately, it seemed that Wu Pengpeng had indeed passed away as she had hoped. But before she could even celebrate, Wu Pengpeng had "come back from the dead."

Well, at least she had thought it was just a "brief rally." When she saw Wu Pengpeng unconscious and being rushed to the emergency room, she even felt like she was hearing the trumpet of victory. Who would have thought that Wu Pengpeng would emerge unscathed?

In just a few short hours, her emotions had been on a roller - coaster ride, soaring to the clouds one moment and crashing into the depths the next. She was completely exhausted.

Jiang Xinyu looked at Wu You with a pale face. She saw that his legs were shaking violently, and he was barely able to stand upright by leaning against the wall.

"Pengpeng..."

The long five - hour wait and the excruciating anxiety had almost drained all his energy. The lingering fear of almost losing her pressed down on his chest, making it ache.

He wanted to ask how she was, but he was afraid that if he said one more word, he would burst into tears on the spot.

Wu Pengpeng looked at the haggard - looking man in front of her and felt an inexplicable pang in her heart.

She rummaged through her meager memories for a while and finally remembered that this man was her second uncle, Wu You.

She wanted to comfort him, but feeling that she couldn't handle the situation smoothly yet, she just softly called out, "Uncle."

Hearing this address, the crowd didn't look disappointed. Instead, they looked relieved.

They had prepared for the worst. As long as she was alive, even if she became a vegetable, they would accept it.

Now that Wu Pengpeng had regained consciousness, they felt it was a great blessing from heaven.

Wu You replied with a tearful "Yes." Finally regaining his composure, he took a step towards her and asked, "How do you feel? Are you still in pain?"

Almost instinctively, Wu Pengpeng shrank behind He Qianshan.

Seeing her reaction, Wu You froze in place as if he had been cast under a spell.

He was like a child being scolded by an adult. He was heart - broken but dared not show it, trying his best to suppress his emotions.

Wu Pengpeng felt sad. The words "Second Uncle" hovered on her lips for a moment but were swallowed back.

The original owner had been killed. Now that she had lost her memory and the situation was still unclear, except for He Qianshan, she saw everyone as a potential threat.

Her previous reaction was not intentional but just an instinctive self - defense mechanism.

She forced a smile at Wu You and said obediently, "Thank you for your concern. I'm fine."

After saying that, she didn't dare to look at Wu You's reaction anymore. Instead, she turned to the others present and said, "I'm sorry to have worried you all. I'm fine now. It's already so late. Everyone, go back and rest!"

Wu You looked sad but tried to remain calm. "Okay, we'll do as you say." Then he waved his hand to the crowd. "Everyone, go back!"

After seeing everyone off, Wu Pengpeng let out a long sigh of relief.

He Qianshan was just putting a pillow behind her back. Hearing her sigh, he looked at her with amusement. "You seem to be quite afraid of them?"

Now that the tension had dissipated, a sharp pain shot through her left wrist, and Wu Pengpeng couldn't help but frown. "It's not that I'm afraid."

He Qianshan noticed the crease between her eyebrows and became nervous again. "What's wrong? Is it very painful? I'll go and call the doctor."

Seeing that he was about to act immediately, Wu Pengpeng quickly stopped him. "No need. I just didn't place my arm properly."

She had suffered a fracture before and knew that doctors couldn't do much about this kind of pain. She could only endure it.

Afraid that He Qianshan would worry, she quickly changed the subject. "I've lost my memory. Naturally, I'll be on guard in an unfamiliar environment and around unfamiliar people. I don't know much about my family, so of course, I have to keep my distance from them."

He Qianshan fetched a small cushion and placed it under Wu Pengpeng's left arm. His movements were as gentle as if he were handling a priceless treasure.

"What about me?" He tucked the quilt in for her, his tone patient and gentle. "Do you also keep me at arm's length in your heart?"

Wu Pengpeng blurted out, "You're different from them!"

I came back for you. It was an instinctive choice, so of course, I trust you whole - heartedly.

"How are you different?" He Qianshan looked up at her, his obsidian - like pupils shining with a burning light.

Wu Pengpeng's heart skipped a beat under his gaze, and she instinctively averted her eyes.

After a moment, she finally came up with an explanation. Looking at He Qianshan sincerely, she said, "You were the first person I saw when I opened my eyes. Actually, the instincts of humans and animals are the same. We tend to regard the first thing we see as our mother."

He Qianshan: "..."

It was quite sudden. He had become a mom without any pain.

Looking at her innocent and sincere big eyes, He Qianshan's heart melted.

He reached out and ruffled her hair, smiling gently. "Okay, baby. You have to get better soon!"

Although his tone was like that of someone coaxing a child, when Wu Pengpeng heard him say the word "baby" in his deep and magnetic voice, she still blushed like a schoolgirl.

Afraid that He Qianshan would notice her blush, she pulled the quilt up over her head and closed her eyes without a care. "I'm sleepy. I'm going to sleep."

Seeing the suspicious blush on her face, He Qianshan thought it was just a fever caused by the fracture. He tucked the quilt in for her, turned off the ceiling lamp, and left only the bedside wall lamp on.

Wu Pengpeng had slept for a few hours in the ICU in the evening, and now with the dull pain in her wrist, she was wide awake.

But she felt He Qianshan's gaze constantly on her face, so she didn't dare to open her eyes. She could only hold her breath and continue pretending to be asleep.

When she opened her eyes again, the sunlight was streaming through the window, casting a golden glow on the floor in front of the bed. He Qianshan was sitting in the middle of that glow, looking almost too good to be true.

Seeing her wake up, he smiled and leaned over to whisper, "You're awake!"

His deep, cello - like voice, softened by the smile, sounded like a celestial melody.

Wu Pengpeng suddenly thought that her decision to come back was simply the best one ever.

Waking up to see a gorgeous man every morning. What a wonderful life!

Seeing that she looked a bit dazed, He Qianshan asked gently, "Do you want to sleep a bit more?"

Wu Pengpeng came back to her senses and quickly shook her head. No, she didn't want to sleep. The gorgeous man was much more interesting than sleep.

With Wu You's instructions, no one dared to come to the hospital to disturb them.

Wu Pengpeng didn't have to worry about dealing with others. She just ate and slept every day.

He Qianshan prepared nutritious meals for Wu Pengpeng in different styles every day and racked his brains to tell her stories.

He often felt that he was like a caregiver for an innocent baby, having to worry about everything for her. But as soon as he saw her, his heart would turn soft.

Wu Pengpeng had no idea that in He Qianshan's heart, she had transformed into "Three - year - old Wu."

She was holding the lunch box with one hand, struggling to eat a braised pork rib.

Looking at her blissful expression as she ate, He Qianshan couldn't help but smile. "Miss Wu."

Wu Pengpeng looked up from her bowl and let out a muffled "Um" with her mouth full of food.

He Qianshan took a tissue and wiped the rice grains from the corner of her mouth, smiling even more gently. "You have to grow up quickly!"
