"Please." He Qian Shan murmured again in a low voice, the tail of his voice almost disappearing in his trembling tone.
Wu Peng Peng felt a jolt in her heart. Her body went limp and she slumped softly into his arms, allowing him to hold her.
He Qian Shan just held her in silence for so long that Wu Peng Peng began to feel a bit embarrassed. She was about to ask him to let go when she felt warm liquid dripping onto the back of her neck.
First one drop, then a continuous stream of warm liquid fell.
Each drop stirred up a tempest in Wu Peng Peng's heart.
He Qian Shan was crying.
Why was he crying?
Wu Peng Peng didn't know the answer, and the current situation didn't allow her time to think about it.
She only felt that the skin on her neck was like being corroded by some corrosive liquid. The intense burning pain rushed straight down along the veins of her blood vessels, hitting the bottom of her heart.
A sudden sharp pain stabbed at her chest, making her hand tremble.
The little kitten in her arms meowed and jumped out of her embrace. It circled around them twice and looked up, meowing continuously.
He Qian Shan was startled by the kitten's meows. He tried hard to control his emotions and reluctantly let go of her, feeling a bit embarrassed.
Wu Peng Peng turned her head stiffly, the shock still lingering in her eyes. "What's wrong with you?"
He Qian Shan turned his head away and casually wiped away his tears. Only when there were no traces of crying on his face did he turn back and regain the initiative. "What's wrong with you? Why did you climb so high?"
Wu Peng Peng didn't know why he was angry. She pointed at the kitten that was watching them curiously and said blankly, "It couldn't get down, so I went to rescue it!"
Before her voice faded, she suddenly realized something. "You thought I was trying to kill myself?"
Thinking of the misunderstanding just now, He Qian Shan felt a bit embarrassed and didn't even dare to meet her eyes.
Wu Peng Peng looked at the genuine worry on his face and felt a lump in her throat.
Although she was touched, still...
"Mr. He, I lost my memory, not my mind," she said playfully as she deliberately stepped forward. "I still have so much money at home. Why would I want to die?"
Caught in his thoughts, He Qian Shan felt a bit annoyed. "It's so cold. What were you doing on the rooftop?"
Wu Peng Peng looked away guiltily at the tall buildings in the distance and evaded the question. "I just wanted to see if there were any opportunities to make money."
He Qian Shan didn't suspect her. "Then why didn't you answer my call?"
"I just didn't have the chance yet!" Wu Peng Peng pointed at the kitten beside her feet and raised her left arm in plaster, indicating her helplessness.
Just as she had caught the kitten, her phone rang. She wanted to answer it but was afraid of falling, so she had to wait until she got down. Who would have thought that he would come running before she could even get down.
And he brought such a commotion.
Wu Peng Peng felt a bit guilty. "Sorry! But why were you crying?"
He Qian Shan said grumpily, "I was afraid that if you died, no one would support me!"
Wu Peng Peng heaved a sigh of relief. She reached out to put her arms around his neck but sadly found that the height difference was too great. So she had to settle for patting his shoulder boldly. "Don't worry. I won't die until I'm 120 years old."
After thinking for a while, she added, "Not even if the king of heaven comes!"
He Qian Shan pulled her coat a bit tighter and said seriously, as if making a promise, "I won't let them take you away."
When they came down from the rooftop, a nurse saw Wu Peng Peng from afar and said anxiously, "Miss Wu, where have you been? Mr. He has been going crazy looking for you..."
Before she could finish, she saw He Qian Shan coming from around the corner. Blushing, she quickly walked away.
Wu Peng Peng didn't expect that He Qian Shan's search for her had become such a public affair.
She felt a mix of emotions in her heart. She turned to He Qian Shan and said, "Next time I go somewhere, I'll definitely tell you first."
He Qian Shan gave a vague "hmm" and changed the subject. "Let's go. Didn't you want to eat ice cream?"
Saying that, he took her hand and walked towards the ward.
When Wu Peng Peng entered the ward, she found that the ice cream had been spilled all over the floor and there was also a bunch of candied haws lying beside it.
He Qian Shan had been so eager to find Wu Peng Peng that this part of his memory was blank.
He looked at the smashed ice cream on the floor in surprise and then at Wu Peng Peng. "Well, how about I order you some takeout?"
Wu Peng Peng noticed his guilt and quickly comforted him. "No need. I suddenly don't want to eat it anymore after being out in the cold upstairs."
Her eyes swept over the candied haws beside her, and she unconsciously licked her lips.
He Qian Shan caught this small movement of hers sharply and quickly said, "I bought the candied haws downstairs. I'll go down and buy you another bunch."
But when he looked at the hand holding Wu Peng Peng's, he was reluctant to let go and was in a dilemma.
If he took Wu Peng Peng downstairs with him, he was afraid that the crowded people downstairs would bump into her. But if he left her alone here, he was not at ease.
Wu Peng Peng sensed his thoughts. She led him to the candied haws, bent down, and picked them up. "It's okay. This is still edible."
She held the candied haws in front of He Qian Shan, and He Qian Shan cooperatively removed the plastic bag on it.
Wu Peng Peng bent down and took a bite. The sweet and sour taste filled her taste buds, and she instantly smiled.
He Qian Shan looked at her smiling face, and his still-frightened heart finally felt a bit of warmth.
During their subsequent time together, Wu Peng Peng faintly felt that He Qian Shan had become anxious and insecure.
Although he concealed it well, she still noticed.
Every time she went for a check-up, she could always hear him asking the doctor again and again through the door why it wasn't over yet.
His tone was filled with hidden restlessness and uneasiness. He was afraid of being noticed but had to endure it.
Annoyed by his constant questions, the doctor said helplessly and amusingly, "Don't worry. She won't run away."
Then he would smile softly and say, "She's afraid of pain. Take your time."
Even when they were alone, his eyes never left her for a moment.
Sometimes when Wu Peng Peng stayed in the bathroom for too long, when she came out, she would always catch He Qian Shan staring straight at the bathroom door, as if he would break in the next second and pull her out of the toilet.
When their eyes met, he would smile and resume his gentle and amiable appearance.
Wu Peng Peng felt helpless and heartache in her heart but didn't know how to comfort him.
One morning when she woke up, she saw He Qian Shan sitting in front of the hospital bed, staring intently at her as if she would disappear if he blinked.
She didn't know if he had stayed up all night, but his eyes were already bloodshot and there was a prominent dark circle under his eyes.
Seeing his appearance, Wu Peng Peng felt soft and sad in her heart. "He Qian Shan."
He Qian Shan withdrew his concerned gaze and smiled gently at her. "Are you hungry? I'll go heat some milk for you."
He got up and walked to the outer room. He took a carton of milk and put it in the microwave.
Wu Peng Peng watched him through the glass window. His body was like a fully drawn bow, always in a tense state, ready to shoot an arrow from a hundred steps away and rescue her from danger when she was in trouble.
She sighed in her heart and softly called his name. "He Qian Shan."
"Hmm?" He Qian Shan turned back and smiled at her, his eyes gentle.
Wu Peng Peng's eyes suddenly felt sore and painful, and her voice was a bit choked. "Don't worry. I won't leave, won't get hurt, and won't die."
Even if one day I have to die, I will definitely say goodbye to you properly.
He Qian Shan looked into her gentle eyes, and suddenly he felt an overwhelming sense of grievance in his heart.
He was like a lonely soul carrying a secret alone for a thousand years. Then, on a sunny morning, she reached out her hands to take over his secret and said to him, "Let it go."
The lingering fears collapsed in his heart like a withered tree being destroyed. It took him a great deal of effort to make himself look calm.
His lips twitched several times before he softly uttered an "hmm".
At this moment, the microwave made a crisp "ding" sound. He quickly turned around to check the milk, afraid that she would see his red eyes.
Then he heard her voice again, passing through mountains, rivers, lakes, and seas, crossing the stars and years, gently and firmly falling into his ears.
She said, "So, don't be afraid of anything."
