Chapter 56: Those Who Show Off Their Love Die Fast

The sky had completely darkened. The expanse of the sky was as black as ink, with a crescent moon hanging high. The twinkling lights in the teaching building were like myriads of stars in the galaxy.

Chi Xu held his books firmly and walked out of the classroom. He leaned lazily against the wall, lowered his eyes, and casually opened his textbook.

Soon, a small bread was slipped in between the pages, hidden perfectly.

He hooked the corner of his lips, smiling silently. He picked up the bread and held it in his palm.

The autumn wind was cool, even cold, swirling around Chi Xu's clothes.

Chi Xu tightened his clothes, tore open the package, and took small bites.

The bread was small, and he finished it in a few mouthfuls, which slightly filled his stomach.

His heart was burning hot, far outweighing the coolness of the night.

Chi Xu tilted his head slightly and looked at the crescent moon on the horizon.

Yuan Yuan had always been thinking about him. Look, wasn't this proof? She was worried that he hadn't had dinner.

Many details were actions done subconsciously, from the bottom of one's heart without much thought.

Whether it was out of true feelings or false pretenses, perhaps it didn't matter anymore.

As long as it was something she did.

Chi Xu's mouth curved up again. The suppressed emotions from last night finally found an outlet at this moment and rushed out.

The bell rang for the end of class, and the teacher announced a break.

The White Rabbit Toffees in her pocket had been warmed by the heat. Jiang Yuan squeezed them with her hand and found that they seemed a bit soft.

She was surprised, and just then the teacher announced the break.

So she took out one, tore off the wrapper, and put it in her mouth.

Her eyes widened slightly. The White Rabbit Toffee in her mouth was sticky and clung to her teeth.

It tasted just like when she was a child.

How did Chi Xu manage to buy it?

Jiang Yuan was both surprised and delighted.

"Yuan Yuan, what are you eating? You look so happy," Lin Suye, who was lying on the desk, asked curiously.

"White Rabbit Toffee."

"It smells so good. Don't they all taste the same? Do you have any more? Can I have a taste?"

Lin Suye was really intrigued. She licked her lips. In her impression, the White Rabbit Toffee was only delicious when she was a child. Maybe the production process had changed, but it no longer tasted the same as before.

Jiang Yuan gave one to Lin Suye. Lin Suye immediately popped it into her mouth. Her eyes widened, and she nodded repeatedly. "This is the taste I like. Where did you buy it, Jiang Yuan? I haven't tasted it for a long time."

"Yuan Yuan, can I have one more?"

"No, I'm not giving any more. I only have this much," Jiang Yuan firmly refused Lin Suye's request.

Lin Suye complained about her behavior and said pitifully, "It's just a candy. Give me one more. Next time, I'll buy you ten. It's a good deal, isn't it?"

Jiang Yuan refused again. Who knew if she could buy this kind of toffee.

"Chi Xu secretly slipped these to me when I passed him the books just now. There aren't many," Jiang Yuan whispered.

"What? He gave you toffees when you passed him the books!" Lin Suye's eyes widened. Jiang Yuan was so startled that she quickly covered her mouth. Lin Suye mumbled indistinctly, "You two are so bold. You even dared to do this right under the teacher's nose."

"Not only that, Yuan Yuan was worried that I would be hungry at night and didn't have dinner, so she slipped a piece of bread into my book," a voice with obvious amusement rang out from the side.

Chi Xu shamelessly showed off that he had eaten the small piece of bread Jiang Yuan gave him.

Lin Suye pulled Jiang Yuan's hand away, looked at Chi Xu, and deliberately pretended to vomit. She grabbed Jia Fang, who had just come over, and said,

"Ugh~ Those who show off their love die fast. Jia Fang, show them your love."

Jia Fang looked at Lin Suye like she was an idiot. He disgustedly slapped her hand away and rolled his eyes. "Where am I going to show off my love? Am I crazy?"

"With me. Let's disgust them two," Lin Suye didn't care at all. She grinned. Then, as if she suddenly thought of something, she had an epiphany.

"I know. You're a dog, after all. You've been eating dog food every day, so you're used to it."

Jia Fang: "..."

Jia Fang silently took a few steps back to stay away from Lin Suye.

Jiang Yuan and Chi Xu watched the interaction between the two with amusement. Their cheeks turned slightly red under their teasing.

She pointed to a quiet place outside. Chi Xu nodded, and the two left one after another, getting away from the noisy Lin Suye and Jia Fang.

The corridor outside the classroom was relatively quiet. The moonlight gently spread on the ground.

Jiang Yuan put her hands on the railing and looked into the distance. She deliberately didn't look at him. "Did you eat the bread? Are you full?"

Chi Xu answered very honestly, "No."

Jiang Yuan was immediately amused. She thought Chi Xu would answer that he was full.

After all, sometimes when a boy faced a girl he liked, he would be stubborn to save face.

"Let's go buy something to eat after school later," Chi Xu added.

He shifted his gaze and landed on Jiang Yuan's profile. Looking at the stray hairs blown by the wind, he had an urge to tuck them behind her ear.

He forcefully held it back and casually looked away.

"By the way, where did you buy the White Rabbit Toffee? It tastes exactly the same as when I was a child," Jiang Yuan turned her head, smiling faintly, and asked the question she had been wanting to ask.

"In a store near the back gate of the school playground."

"How did you find it?" Jiang Yuan asked again. The school playground was far from the dormitory they lived in at that time, and usually, they only went there for P.E. classes.

She really didn't know there was a store there.

"I was tired from playing basketball and was about to be late for class. I just randomly went to a store near the back gate to buy some water. Maybe I looked carefully, and I actually saw the White Rabbit Toffee," Chi Xu grinned and proudly straightened his back. He leaned against the corridor railing and looked at Jiang Yuan sideways.

"I just bought a few casually to replenish my energy. I took a bite on the way, and it tasted exactly the same as when I was a child. It was the same as the one you let me taste last time."

"So you ran back to buy more? And that's why you were late?"

Jiang Yuan smoothly continued his story. She looked up at him but accidentally met his smiling eyes, which were brightly shining.

Time seemed to stand still. The wind blew through the treetops downstairs, making a rustling sound that was clearly audible.

"Yeah."

The boy's words hit her heart directly as soon as they fell.

Jiang Yuan could hear her heart beating wildly, and it didn't stop for a long time.

The corners of her mouth couldn't help but turn up.

"I have a lot more here. Stretch out your hand and catch them," Chi Xu's action of taking out the White Rabbit Toffees from his pocket was a bit funny. He smiled awkwardly, took out a large handful, and held them up in front of Jiang Yuan with both hands.

Jiang Yuan put them all in her pocket. Her pocket was full, and there was no more room for anything else.

"No, I still have some here. Take them all," Chi Xu said.

"Chi Xu, can you keep the extra ones for now? We can just put them in the living room when we get back at night. Aren't you being silly?"
