Chapter 201: One Step Closer to the Truth

Chu Hengyuan said expressionlessly, "My answer was also a reasonable guess. I just might have guessed it wrong."

"Humph, that's just your prejudice against me! Sister-in-law's answer was definitely the correct one!"

Tang Xingwei liked Rong Lan's answer so much that when Amber finished the basic check-up and they were about to take it home, he gave Rong Lan a bag of cat food.

The cat food was supposed to be a gift for Rong Lan and Chu Amber, but it was still Chu Hengyuan who carried the bag. Watching his friend enthusiastically hand over the cat food and stop them from paying, he hesitated to speak. Fortunately, Uncle Tang had more than just Tang Xingwei as a child, or else the Tang Group would surely go under one day. Tang Xingwei had managed to swindle a sum of money from him with great effort, but then he just casually gave them a bag of quite expensive cat food. If this were a proper business situation, Tang Xingwei would go bankrupt in just a few years.

Tang Xingwei didn't think that much about it at all. He liked Rong Lan's answer, and he also wanted to thank Amber for the dried fish it had given him, so he took a bag of the cat food that Chu Hengyuan usually ordered and gave it away.

He happily saw the family of three off from the pet hospital. Standing at the hospital entrance, he watched them leave reluctantly. Only then did it dawn on him that he seemed to have suffered another loss. Why did he give them the cat food?! Chu Hengyuan had said that he would transfer the money for the dried fish after he got his salary. He hadn't even received the money for the dried fish Chu Hengyuan had ordered, yet he had already given away the cost of a bag of cat food!

"Why didn't Amber just carry the dried fish from home and let me and your daddy bring it to the hospital?" After getting in the car, Rong Lan grabbed Amber's two front paws and played with it while asking this question that had puzzled her for a long time.

She could guess why Amber had brought the dried fish to the hospital, but she couldn't figure out why the little guy had hidden the dried fish. She had always thought that it had hidden the dried fish because it was afraid of having its snacks cut off for being naughty. After all, it didn't have to hide the dried fish. It could have just carried the dried fish that its brother had placed on top of the fridge and shown it to her to express its desire to bring the dried fish to the hospital. They would surely have gone along with it.

"Meow, meow, meow!" The little ragdoll cat twitched its ears and meowed, as if it were seriously explaining the reason to Rong Lan.

But no one knew if it was because what it said was too complicated. Even the little fox who was at the tenth level of cat language didn't understand a single word.

Chu Hengyuan glanced at the human and the cat in the passenger seat who were looking at each other blankly, and couldn't help but laugh helplessly. "I've guessed the reason. Do you want to hear how I explain this for Amber, Lanlan?"

Rong Lan turned her head, smiling brightly. "Tell me, brother."

Chu Hengyuan looked at the road ahead without turning his head to look at his girl, but he could feel her excited mood. "It just wanted to save its dried fish to share with its little friends. The little guy probably thought that if it hid a piece of dried fish, it was equivalent to eating one less. After all, it couldn't hold me down when I was opening the dried fish and meow at me to imply that it wouldn't eat the dried fish that night and wanted to save it for its friends to try." So the little guy could only use this method.

But it probably didn't expect that there would always be dried fish at home. Every time the number of dried fish at home was in the single digits, he would go to Tang Xingwei to get some or ask Tang Xingwei to send someone to deliver it. Except for the time when the little fox had made a ruckus with Amber, it had almost eaten dried fish every day no matter how much it hid.

"This idea... actually makes sense..." Rong Lan twitched the corner of her mouth and then looked down at the cat. "Did you hear the reason your daddy came up with for you, little Amber? Tell me, is your daddy right?"

"Meow, meow, meow!"

"Okay, I understand." Rong Lan gave up trying to guess what the little cat meant and started to make up nonsense seriously. "Little Amber said it didn't understand what its daddy meant."

Chu Hengyuan raised his eyebrows. "Why do I think little Amber means that I'm right?"

"You must have heard wrong, brother!" Just as she finished speaking, the phone rang.

Rong Lan took three seconds to realize that it was the ringtone of her new phone. However, just as she took out her phone, the ringtone stopped. The person who had called her had hung up.

She glanced at the number of the missed call and immediately opened the messaging app to check the unread messages.

She knew it. It was because she had taken too long to reply to the messages. Her sister, Bai Rongran, had lost her patience and called to urge her.

After reading the message sent by Bai Rongran, she tapped on the phone screen and replied with a "Okay". Then she turned to her brother with a big smile and reported, "Brother, Rongran invited me out for dinner, so I might be home a bit late on Monday night."

"Out for dinner?" Chu Hengyuan repeated these words, with a deeper smile on his face. "Is it really just as simple as going out for dinner?" He knew that Rong Lan and Bai Rongran had become closer, but not close enough to make an appointment to have dinner on a weekday. He always felt that someone was going to be in trouble. He just didn't know if that unlucky person would be Chu Chuan or Han Xiaoshuang, whom the girl had specifically asked to be released.

"Of course! Rongran found a nice restaurant and wants to take me there to try it out. That's all there is to it." Rong Lan looked innocent. "What bad things could we possibly do?"

"That's hard to say." Chu Hengyuan shook his head helplessly. "I don't care what you two do. Just be safe."

"Got it, brother. Don't worry. It's just a meal. I won't be in any danger!" Rong Lan insisted that she and her sister, Bai Rongran, were just going out for dinner. After all, the things they were going to do were not suitable for others to know. She didn't want Chu Hengyuan to know at all because it would greatly affect her image.

Chu Hengyuan knew deep down that it wasn't that simple, but since the girl didn't want to say, he didn't want to ask too much. He would just wait until Tuesday to see which unlucky person had suffered, and then he would know what the girl had been up to on Monday night.

On Monday morning, Rong Lan still went to the fortune-telling shop on time. Wang Tong also rarely showed up at the fortune-telling shop early in the morning.

"Little miss, I'm going to go on a long trip in a few days. The matter you asked me to investigate is almost getting to the bottom of it." Seeing that Song Wanyue and Ji Zhoutong hadn't come yet, Wang Tong simply told Rong Lan about the matter she had entrusted to him. Since there was no outsider around, he didn't address her too formally as the boss.

Hearing this, Rong Lan's eyes lit up. "Can I get the truth before Chinese New Year?"

"I can only say that there's a high possibility." Wang Tong didn't make any absolute promises in case his long trip didn't go smoothly.

"As long as there's a possibility!" Rong Lan was already very satisfied with this progress. After all, her brother had also told her that there was a chance to get the result before the New Year. As for the truth about the baby-switching incident back then, as long as she got the results from both Wang Tong and her brother and compared them, if the two results were the same, then she would know the truth.
