Chapter 18: New Land Allocation

Perhaps because she had possessed the body of a child, Yun Que'er really had a sweet tooth. She quickly wrapped her arms around Yun Jianzhou's neck and gave him a smooch on the cheek.

Yun Fujin, watching from the side, seemed a bit jealous.

"Little Que'er, it's always big brother who cooks for you. Why are you showing such different treatment?"

Yun Que'er grinned and reached out her hands to Yun Fujin. She jumped into his arms and kissed him on both cheeks.

"Both big brother and second brother are the best!" She then looked at Yun Yi. "Third sister is the best too!"

Yun Yi blushed and turned her head away.

"Stop trying to flatter me!"

The whole family was in high spirits. Just as they were about to leave, the raindrops started to fall more frequently. While joking around, Yun Jianzhou managed to turn his head and glance at the village head.

"Village head, you'd better stay here. I reckon there'll be a heavy rain today. Don't be in a hurry. When the water rises, won't you just float up?"

The village head was so angry that his eyes almost popped out. Float up? Would he still be alive if he floated up?

He couldn't swim at all. If he really got trapped here, he'd surely watch himself drown!

Even if the stinky ditch wouldn't be filled up, it was still uncomfortable to be caught in the rain here!

"Stop cursing me!" the village head roared.

"I'm not." Yun Jianzhou patted the dirt off his pants. "Let's go. We're going home."

Seeing that they were really about to leave, the village head finally panicked.

He shrank at the edge of the stinky ditch. After holding it in for a long time, he finally couldn't help but speak up.

"Can you pull me up? Save me!"

This was exactly what Yun Que'er had been waiting for. She immediately jumped out of Yun Fujin's arms, ran up on her little legs, and lay on the edge of the ditch looking at the village head.

"Of course we can save you, but I have a few things to ask you."

The village head was going crazy with anxiety. "What time is it? You still have things to ask me? Can't we talk about it after I get up?"

"Of course not." Yun Que'er played with her little braids. "I have to ask you. Was it a false accusation when you said our family was engaging in speculation and profiteering?"

The village head was stunned. So this little girl was settling scores with him!

Seeing that the village head didn't say anything, Yun Que'er was about to get up.

The village head panicked. "Yes, yes, yes! I really didn't investigate this matter clearly. It was indeed a false accusation. But didn't I clear your family's name later?"

"How can that be the same?" Yun Que'er frowned her little eyebrows. "Later you said our family was meritorious for voluntarily handing in those sweet potatoes, but the villagers don't know. They don't like to inquire about news. They must think our family did something wrong. Village head, if something like this happened to your family, you probably wouldn't feel good either, right?"

The village head just wanted to get up. He nodded whatever Yun Que'er said.

"Yes, that would definitely feel bad!"

Yun Que'er rolled her eyes. "So, after we save you, you'll tell the whole village that our family has made meritorious deeds, not engaged in petty theft. And you have to put up a notice on the big tree at the village entrance. It can only be taken down after three days."

The village head thought about it in his mind. The fact was indeed like this. Putting up a notice for three days wasn't a big deal, so he agreed.

"Okay, I'll do as you say. Hurry up and pull me up!"

But the village head never expected that Yun Que'er would press her advantage.

"Don't be in a hurry. There's another thing. I have to ask you. This concerns whether our family can have enough to eat in the future."

"You're going too far!" The village head pointed at Yun Que'er and raised his voice. "Are you never going to stop?"

"I'm just reasoning with you. How can it be never-ending?" Yun Que'er immediately retorted. "There are so many people and so much land in the village. Logically, each family should be allocated fair land, at least no family should suffer, right?"

The village head nodded helplessly. "It should be fair."

"So." Yun Que'er spread out her little hands. "Why is our family's land so small and so difficult to cultivate? Even cutting pigweed is a hassle. Do you think this is fair?"

The village head's heart skipped a beat. Except for Yun Jianzhou, the Yun family members were all very taciturn. They usually didn't like to have conflicts with others. But he didn't expect this little girl in their family to be so powerful.

For so many years, the Yun family had never mentioned that their land was bad. But this little girl, Yun Que'er, actually pointed it out.

The village head darkened his face and took a deep breath.

"What exactly do you want to say?" After holding it in for a long time, the village head only managed to utter this sentence.

"I just want to say that the village head should redistribute the land in the village. Or allocate some other land to our family to compensate for our losses over the years."

"What losses!" The village head finally couldn't help but curse. "Everyone earns work points to eat. If the village hadn't allocated the land, your family wouldn't have had a single grain of food! Instead of being grateful, you even dare to ask me for compensation? Aren't you ashamed?"

Yun Que'er laughed. "Oh~ I just realized that the village head is so unreasonable. It seems we have nothing more to talk about."

Yun Que'er stood up and took Yun Fujin's hand. "Big brother, let's go."

The village head was now in a dilemma. It wasn't right to stay, and it wasn't right to agree to Yun Que'er either.

But he only knew one thing. He couldn't stay here any longer. Otherwise, he wasn't sure if he could even keep his life.

Damn it! The village head gritted his teeth in anger. This little girl was blackmailing him!

But since he was in her grasp, what could he do?

"Then tell me how much compensation you want?"

Yun Que'er turned around and said magnanimously.

"I'm not greedy. I just want land that's easy to grow crops on and easy to cut pigweed on. And our family has a large population. Everyone can work, so you should allocate more land to us. We can handle it."

Although Yun Que'er's words seemed polite, the village head could tell that she was asking for a lot.

"How can a kid like you have so many ideas?" the village head couldn't help but scold.

He pointed at Yun Fujin. "Did you teach her? And you!"

The village head glared at Yun Jianzhou. "You've never had any good intentions since you were a kid. You must have incited her!"

Yun Jianzhou actually didn't expect Yun Que'er to be able to say so many things. But he knew one thing. He had to stand on the same side as Yun Que'er. He immediately clapped his hands loudly.

"Look at what you're saying. I'm so busy all day. I don't like staying at home and I don't like chatting with kids. How could I have taught her? My big brother is the one who holds up the family. He's busy running around all day. He doesn't have time for this either. And our third sister is also a kid. She's still in school. There's no way anyone taught little Que'er this. And what our little sister said is the truth. If you don't admit it, that's fine. But why are you putting the blame on us?"
