In his youth, he always thought he should like a certain type of girl, but he couldn't tell what the exact criteria for that type were.
It was not until he met Lu Xue that he found that her features, eyebrows, and temperament - everything about her - seemed to start overlapping with the vague shadow in his imagination.
The unclear answer finally emerged from the mist of his subconscious.
Perhaps that was why he had never thought of rejecting the arranged marriage in the will, because from the moment he first saw Lu Xue, he had never felt any repulsion towards her in his heart.
Mu Yuze tossed and turned all night and couldn't fall asleep. So he sat in the yard for a while.
The rain in the late night started to ease and gradually turned into a gentle drizzle. The night sky after the rain was extraordinarily bright.
He counted the raindrops dripping under the eaves. Then he glanced at Lu Xue's closed door and got up to go to the kitchen.
During Lu Xue's absence, the house was still regularly cleaned and stocked with some simple ingredients.
It seemed that Lu Xue hadn't cut off contact with the villager who delivered the ingredients. There were still the necessary bedding in the house, and the floor was so clean that it looked as if it had been swept just a couple of days ago.
After looking around the room, Mu Yuze felt even more bitter.
It seemed that Lu Xue had never felt a sense of belonging with him. Deep down in her heart, she always vaguely thought that she would return here one day.
Mu Yuze silently rummaged through the kitchen and found some ingredients to make a bowl of noodles.
The noodles were simply made but fragrant. After a moment's thought, he added a poached egg on top.
He carried the bowl of noodles to Lu Xue's door and knocked.
When Lu Xue opened the door, she saw Mu Yuze silently place the bowl on the low table beside her and say, "You rushed here last night. You probably haven't eaten yet."
Lu Xue was indeed a bit hungry, but she had been too embarrassed to say so before. Now, seeing the bowl of noodles with the aroma of scallions, tears welled up in her eyes.
She thanked him and sat down to quietly finish the noodles.
Mu Yuze sat beside her, silently watching her. There was no conversation between them, but they both couldn't help but think of the time they had spent together.
For some reason, they always seemed to be closely associated with rainy days. During the last downpour, they had hugged and supported each other on the rooftop.
After going through a series of twists and turns, they had returned to this small courtyard, the place where they first met.
That night, Lu Xue tossed and turned in bed and couldn't fall asleep. She got up and quietly opened the window a crack. Through the gap, she saw Mu Yuze sitting under the eaves, silently gazing at the night sky.
Lu Xue felt a twinge of pain in her heart, but she forced herself back into bed and tried to fall asleep.
She finally fell asleep in the early morning, but she slept restlessly. The more she slept, the more exhausted she felt. For some reason, her whole body started to burn with fever.
When Mu Yuze came to find Lu Xue the next morning, he found that her forehead was burning hot and her face was flushed.
Mu Yuze frowned and touched Lu Xue's forehead with his hand. He quickly withdrew it. Lu Xue had a fever.
She had been caught in the rain for so long last night and hadn't taken any medicine. After sleeping for a night, she finally couldn't hold on.
Mu Yuze picked Lu Xue up in his arms and rushed out of the door, intending to take her to the hospital.
But this was a very remote village. Where could there be a hospital?
He stood at the door, frowning tightly, his face looking very grim.
A neighbor who came over saw the situation and quickly said to him, "When we get sick, we go to the small clinic in the town to see a doctor. It's still early. Hurry up and take her to the town!"
Mu Yuze nodded and thanked the neighbor. Then he quickly drove Lu Xue to the nearby town.
Lu Xue finally received treatment at the small clinic. She was hanging an IV drip groggily, with half of her body slumped softly on Mu Yuze's shoulder.
Mu Yuze sat with her in the shabby corridor, feeling extremely heart - broken.
Halfway through, Lu Xue said she was hungry. Mu Yuze got up and went outside. He walked around and brought back some snacks for her.
There was no supermarket near the small clinic. There was only a small convenience store that seemed on the verge of closing down.
The owner of the convenience store had set up a table at the door and was playing cards with some neighbors. Mu Yuze walked in and searched back and forth between the three shelves several times but couldn't find any healthy food. His eyebrows were always deeply furrowed.
The man was tall, and the shelves were narrow. Standing among them, the space between the shelves seemed so tight that he even had some trouble turning around.
Mu Yuze finally picked out two bottles of milk and a box of small cakes and walked back to the small clinic. When Lu Xue saw the small cakes, her eyes lit up. She gobbled them up in a few mouthfuls.
Then she dozed off again, lying on Mu Yuze's shoulder, continuing to endure the long and boring time of hanging the IV drip.
